The best AI image generator in 2026 depends on what the image is for. A cinematic key visual, a product shot edited ten times, a poster with a headline on it, a logo you need as a vector, and a batch of a thousand images through an API are different jobs with different winners. This list is written by a directory: we track more than 2,800 AI tools, we keep an AI graveyard of the ones that stopped shipping, and none of the picks below paid to be here. The field moves fast: every one of the four leading model families has released a new major version since June. Here it is as of November 8, 2026, one pick per job, with the model version that is actually current and the pricing fine print the landing pages leave off.

The AI image generator market by the numbers

These figures come from our own catalogue, counted on November 8, 2026, not from vendor claims.

  • 194 AI art and image tools have been listed in our AI art and image creation category; 174 are still operating.
  • 16 have shut down — 8.2%, about 1.4 times the 5.8% shutdown rate across all 2,863 tools we track. They include DALL·E 3, which OpenAI removed from its API on May 12, 2026, Reve and OpenAI's Sora app. A further 12 have been acquired.
  • 57% of the operating image tools (100 of 174) offer a free plan or a free tier; 36% are paid-only.
  • Four of the ten picks below now sell access to competitors' models inside their own apps — Adobe Firefly, Leonardo, Krea and Ideogram all offer models such as GPT Image, Nano Banana or FLUX next to their own. Choosing an app is increasingly separate from choosing a model.

Best AI image generator for art direction and style: Midjourney

Midjourney still produces the most distinctive, finished-looking images with the least prompting, which is why it remains the default for concept art, editorial illustration and mood boards. V8.1 has been the default model since June 11, 2026, about four seconds an image with an HD mode at four times V7's resolution, and V8.2, focused on aesthetics and personalisation, followed on July 24. Plans are Basic $10 a month, Standard $30, Pro $60 and Mega $120, with 20% off annual ($8, $24, $48, $96 a month). The fine print: there is no free plan; Basic gives 3.3 fast GPU hours and no unlimited Relax mode; every image is public unless you pay for Pro or Mega, the only plans with Stealth mode; and a company with more than $1 million in annual revenue must be on Pro or Mega to use images commercially. There is no official public API. Midjourney also faces copyright suits from Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. that were unresolved at the time of writing.

Best for everyday images inside a chat: ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the image generator most people already have open, and it is the strongest at following a long, conversational brief and then revising it one instruction at a time. OpenAI's current image model, GPT Image 2.6, shipped on November 4, 2026, adding SVG and animated GIF output; the GPT Image 2 generation added "thinking" image creation for paid plans in April. ChatGPT Free includes "limited" image creation with no published number, Go is $8 a month for more, Plus is $20 for more complex and accurate images, and Pro starts at $100 for unlimited, faster generation. For developers the fine print is retirement speed: OpenAI removed DALL·E 2 and 3 in May, shut down gpt-image-1 on October 23, and retires gpt-image-1.5 on December 1, so pin a model and plan migrations.

Best for editing and character consistency: Nano Banana

Nano Banana, Google's image model family inside Gemini, is the one to use when the job is changing an existing image — swap a background, keep a character consistent across a set, restyle a product shot — while leaving everything else alone. Nano Banana 2.1 became generally available in Google's API on October 6, 2026 and halved the price of a 1K image to about 3.4 cents ($0.05 at 2K, $0.11 at 4K, half that again in batch); Nano Banana Pro remains the higher-quality tier at $0.134 an image. In the Gemini app it is free within Google's "standard limits", which Google does not publish as a number; Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month raises the limit about fourfold. Fine print: there is no free API tier, and Google embeds an invisible SynthID watermark in generated images.

Best for developers and photorealism at scale: FLUX

FLUX, from Black Forest Labs, is the model family most products are built on, and the API is the product: no consumer subscription, just pay per image with nothing charged for failed or moderated outputs. The FLUX 3 family was announced on July 23, 2026; FLUX 3 Image costs $0.048 at 1K and $0.10 at 2K, and the 5.6-billion-parameter FLUX 3 Image Klein, released October 15, costs from under a cent. Klein's weights are open on Hugging Face and free for commercial use by organisations under $5 million in revenue; the flagship model's weights are not open. FLUX.2 remains on sale at lower prices. Black Forest Labs raised $300 million at a $3.25 billion valuation in December 2025, and its models also appear inside Firefly, Leonardo, Krea and Magnific.

Best for text and typography in images: Ideogram

Ideogram is the generator to use when the image has words in it — posters, packaging, thumbnails, ad headlines — because it renders lettering reliably where others smear it. Ideogram 4.5, its newest model, works at native 2K with up to five reference images. Plus is $20 a month or $15 annual for 2,400 priority credits; Pro is $60 or $42 annual for 7,500; Team is $30 a user, or $20 annual, with a two-user minimum. Fine print: the free plan gives 30 priority credits a week and makes everything you generate public, and edits, upscales and partner models always cost credits. Ideogram 4.0's inference code is Apache 2.0 but its weights are non-commercial, so self-hosting it for business needs a paid licence, from $300 a month.

Best for commercially safe images: Adobe Firefly

Adobe Firefly is the choice when legal review matters, because Adobe trains its own Firefly models on licensed content and says their output is safe for commercial use; it also sits inside Photoshop and the rest of Creative Cloud. Firefly Image Model 5, announced in October 2025, is still Adobe's newest image model. Plans run Standard $9.99 a month for 2,000 generative credits, Pro $19.99 for 4,000, Pro Plus $49.99 for 10,000 and Premium $199.99 for 50,000; Creative Cloud Pro at $69.99 includes 4,000. The fine print is important: the "commercially safe" claim covers Adobe's own models, not the partner models from Google, OpenAI and Black Forest Labs that Firefly now also offers; IP indemnification is for eligible enterprise customers only; and the current offer of unlimited generations on select models lasts for a subscriber's first twelve months.

Best for vector graphics and brand assets: Recraft

Recraft generates real, editable vector files — icons, illustrations, logos, patterns — and can match a brand's style from one to ten reference images, which makes it the design team's pick rather than the artist's. Its V4.1 model has been the default since May 2026, and vector generation and the vector editor are on every plan, including free. Basic is $12 a month, or $10 annual, for 1,000 credits; Pro starts at $20 for 2,000 and scales by credit volume. The fine print is in the free tier: free images are owned by Recraft, appear in its public gallery and are not licensed for commercial use, and commercial rights cover only images made while subscribed.

Best for game and concept assets: Leonardo.Ai

Leonardo.Ai bundles its own models (Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism, Phoenix), more than 80 models in total including FLUX 3, Nano Banana 2.1 and GPT Image 2.5, personal model training and a canvas editor into one subscription. It has belonged to Canva since 2024 and keeps shipping. Essential is $12 a month for 8,500 fast tokens, Premium $30 for 25,000 plus unlimited relaxed image generation on select models, and Ultimate $60 for 60,000 with relaxed video as well; yearly billing saves up to 20%. Fine print: the free plan's 150 daily tokens run on automatic model selection only, and its images are public, with Leonardo keeping rights to public images; private generation is paid-only.

Best for real-time generation and many models in one place: Krea

Krea began as a real-time canvas — the image updates as you draw or type — and has become a hub for dozens of image and video models, now led by its own Krea 3, an editing-focused model in public beta since October 15, 2026. The free plan gives 100 compute units a day; Basic is $9 a month or $5 on a yearly plan for 5,000 units, Pro $35 or $21 for 20,000, and Max $105 or $63 for 60,000. Fine print: unused units do not roll over on individual plans, add-on packs expire after 90 days, and the cost of a generation depends on which model you pick, so the same plan buys very different numbers of images.

Best free and local option: Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion is the option for running image generation on your own GPU with no subscription and no content moderation you did not choose, through community tools such as ComfyUI, with thousands of community fine-tunes. Stable Diffusion 3.5 is still Stability AI's newest base image model. The Community License is free for individuals and organisations under $1 million in annual revenue, with registration required for commercial use; above that you need an enterprise licence. Stability AI is independent and raised a $76 million Series B on August 25, 2026, but has spent 2026 on audio and enterprise products rather than a new image model, so the newest open image models now come from Black Forest Labs.

How to choose

Most people need one general generator and one specialist. For a single subscription, pick ChatGPT or Gemini if you already pay for one of them, and Midjourney if the look of the image is the point. Add Ideogram if your images carry text, Recraft if you need vectors, and Firefly if a client or legal team will ask where the training data came from. Developers should start with FLUX or Nano Banana on price per image, and anyone who wants many models under one bill should compare Krea and Leonardo. How we picked

Every pick is live in our directory with an editorial review and was chosen by fit to a job, one winner per job. One pick has changed owners and kept shipping, and we say so. Model versions and prices were read from each vendor's own pricing pages, changelogs and help documents on November 8, 2026; where a vendor does not publish a number, such as ChatGPT's free image allowance or Gemini's daily limit, we say that rather than repeat a third-party estimate. The fine print — public-by-default images, credit meters, revenue thresholds on licences, which models a "commercially safe" promise covers — is stated because it is where the real cost lives. No placement on this list is paid. Tools that stop shipping move to our AI graveyard, which keeps this list honest about survivorship.

Frequently asked

There is no single winner. Midjourney is best for the look of the image, ChatGPT for everyday images from a conversation, Nano Banana for editing and consistency, FLUX for developers, Ideogram for text in images, Adobe Firefly for commercially safe output, Recraft for vectors, Leonardo.Ai for game and concept assets, Krea for real-time work across many models, and Stable Diffusion for free local generation.
