DALL·E 3 was OpenAI’s third-generation text-to-image model and, for a stretch of 2023–2025, the default way millions of ChatGPT users made pictures. GPT Image replaced it as ChatGPT’s built-in generator in December 2025, and OpenAI shut the DALL·E API down on May 12, 2026 — closing the product line whose 2021 debut first showed the world what text-to-image could do.

Why Use DALL·E 3

Editorial Review
Our take on DALL·E 3.

OpenAI retired DALL·E 3 on 12 May 2026. It was a capable natural-language image generator in its time; anyone landing here should use ChatGPT Images on the GPT Image models instead.
What works
- Understood plain descriptions without prompt-engineering tricks
- Conversational iteration inside ChatGPT rather than a separate web tool
- Reasonable quality for non-specialist use
What doesn't
- Retired 12 May 2026 — requests using the dall-e-3 model ID now return an error
- Always required a paid ChatGPT account despite being listed as free
- Output varied noticeably between runs on the same prompt
Retired. OpenAI shut down DALL·E 3 and DALL·E 2 on 12 May 2026. Requests using the dall-e-3 model ID now return an error, and the product had already stopped being ChatGPT's default image generator in December 2025, when GPT Image 1.5 replaced it and existing users were migrated automatically.
What to use instead: image generation inside ChatGPT now runs on OpenAI's GPT Image line, currently GPT Image 2, which handles rendered text far more reliably than DALL·E ever managed. It is included with ChatGPT Plus and Pro. If you came here from an older comparison, that is the direct successor.
For the record, what DALL·E 3 was good at: it understood ordinary descriptive language, so you did not need to learn prompt syntax to get a usable result, and iterating conversationally inside ChatGPT beat working through a standalone web interface. Its weaknesses were consistency — the same prompt could diverge significantly across runs — and an access story that never matched its "free" reputation, since you needed a paid ChatGPT account throughout.
