Our take on Claude.

The best long-form writing and code-reasoning model on the market in May 2026. Sonnet 4.6 is the right daily driver for most knowledge workers; Opus 4.7 is the right choice when accuracy matters more than speed. Pricing is the only meaningful complaint.

What works

  • Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.7 lead public reasoning benchmarks (SWE-Bench Verified, MMLU, GPQA Diamond) as of May 2026 — and the lead shows up in real work, not just leaderboards.
  • 200K context window with strong recall. On 80K-token RFP documents, Claude pulls accurate cross-page references where GPT-4o starts to drift.
  • Artifacts and Projects make Claude.ai a genuine workspace for multi-step deliverables. The chat is no longer the unit of work.
  • API pricing per million tokens is competitive with OpenAI, and Computer Use is the only frontier-vendor feature of its kind.
  • Constitutional AI training shows in refusal quality — fewer false refusals than GPT-4o, more nuanced ones than Gemini. The model knows the difference between dangerous and uncomfortable.

What doesn't

  • No native image generation, voice mode, or video. You will still need ChatGPT or Midjourney to round out a real workflow.
  • Pro tier ($20 / month) hits message caps faster than ChatGPT Plus on heavy days. The Max tiers ($100 / $200) feel expensive next to Plus.
  • Slower than Gemini Flash on short queries; Haiku 4.5 narrows the gap but is not the default in claude.ai.
  • Memory feature only just shipped; the cross-session graph is shallower than ChatGPT's.
  • Brand reach still trails ChatGPT among non-technical users. Selling Claude to a marketing or sales team takes more pitching than it should.

Claude has earned the position it now occupies — the model that serious writers, coders, and analysts reach for when accuracy matters more than breadth. Anthropic's bet on reasoning quality over modality coverage has paid off in 2025–26, and the May 2026 release of Opus 4.7 cemented the lead. The interesting question is no longer "is Claude good enough" but "is Claude worth the second subscription."

The reasoning lead, with receipts

Sonnet 4.6 (released January 2026) and Opus 4.7 (May 2026) currently top public reasoning benchmarks across SWE-Bench Verified, MMLU, and GPQA Diamond. Benchmarks are not work, but the lead shows up in real tasks. On a 12-page technical RFP, Opus 4.7 catches contradictions between sections that GPT-4o flat-out misses. On a 4,000-line TypeScript refactor handed to Sonnet through Claude Code, the model produced a patch we shipped with one revision; Cursor's Composer with the same model produced two patches we shipped with three rounds of review.

The 200K context window has held up in our testing on long-document workflows in a way that the spec sheet alone does not convey. On 80K-token legal briefs and 60K-token codebases, recall is strong through the middle of the context, not just the ends. This is the lift that justifies Claude over ChatGPT for any work that involves real source material.

Artifacts and Projects are the actual product

The model is the reason to be here; Artifacts and Projects are the reason to stay. Artifacts make Claude.ai a tool that produces deliverables — code, documents, charts, small apps — that you can iterate on inside the same session. Projects give that work persistent context, custom instructions, and shared knowledge files. A team using Claude Projects to draft client proposals, with shared style guides and prior winning decks loaded in, is already extracting more value per month than the $20 tier costs.

What you are giving up

Claude has no image generation, no voice mode, and no video. Anthropic has telegraphed that this is a deliberate sequencing choice — invest in reasoning quality, ship modalities when they are actually good. We respect the discipline, but a one-subscription user will still need ChatGPT or Midjourney to cover the gaps. Plan for that reality rather than waiting for it.

Pricing is the second honest complaint. Pro at $20 / month matches ChatGPT Plus, but hits message caps faster on heavy days. Max at $100 or $200 / month is the right tier for someone who has standardized on Claude as a primary work tool — but it lands as a steep step up from Pro, and "Claude Max" does not yet have a recognition curve that justifies the bill to a finance team.

Opus vs Sonnet, in practice

The decision tree we use:

Use caseModel
Daily writing, coding, chatSonnet 4.6
Multi-step research with long sourcesOpus 4.7
High-volume API automationHaiku 4.5
Anything where being wrong costs moneyOpus 4.7

Most users overpay for Opus when Sonnet would be fine, then under-allocate Opus on the few tasks per week where the accuracy delta matters. Get the routing right and the bill drops.

Who should buy

Claude Pro is the right answer for a knowledge worker whose output quality matters more than breadth — writers, lawyers, analysts, individual coders. It is the right answer as a second subscription alongside ChatGPT or Gemini for anyone who does serious long-form work.

It is not the right answer as a sole AI subscription if voice, image, or video are part of your week. And it is not the right answer if the budget conversation hinges on brand recognition with non-technical stakeholders — that pitch still goes more easily with ChatGPT.

The honest comparison

See our maintained head-to-head at /compare/chatgpt-vs-claude and /compare/claude-vs-gemini for task-by-task breakdowns. Short version: if your AI work is mostly conversation, ChatGPT. If your AI work is mostly producing things, Claude.

Re-check triggers

We will re-rate when Anthropic ships a native image or voice mode, when a Sonnet 5 or Opus 5 release changes the benchmark lead, or when the Max-tier pricing structure gets a meaningful adjustment.
