Row Zero is a cloud spreadsheet built for big data, founded in Seattle in 2021 by former Amazon Web Services engineers Breck Fresen and Nick End. It was acquired by Databricks in September 2026.
What it does
Row Zero looks and behaves like Excel or Google Sheets, with familiar formulas, pivot tables and keyboard shortcuts, but runs in the cloud and can open datasets far beyond Excel's roughly one-million-row limit, up to a billion rows on enterprise plans. It connects directly to Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Postgres, S3 and other sources, refreshes automatically when source data changes, can write back to the warehouse, and supports native Python. An AI spreadsheet agent summarises and visualises data, and enterprise features include row-level security, SSO and export restrictions.
What happened
Row Zero raised a $10M seed round led by IA Ventures in 2025, bringing total funding to $13M. On September 24, 2026, Databricks announced it had acquired Row Zero on undisclosed terms. Databricks plans to make Row Zero the spreadsheet interface for Genie, its AI coworker, governed by Unity Catalog, and to offer it to Databricks customers on all major clouds while keeping support for other data sources. The standalone product remains available at rowzero.com.
