VocalIQ, founded in 2011 as a spinout of Cambridge University, built self-learning voice-AI software designed to hold natural, context-aware conversations rather than parse rigid commands. Apple acquired the small team in late 2015 and folded its technology into Siri. The standalone product never reached the market; VocalIQ disappeared into Apple as one of the building blocks of its voice assistant.
