AI Overview

Google’s AI-generated answer summary at the top of search results — synthesised from multiple sources, replacing some traditional blue-link traffic.

In plain English

AI Overview (AIO) is the AI-generated answer box Google shows above traditional search results for many queries. It's powered by a custom Gemini variant and pulls from a handful of cited web sources to write a multi-paragraph answer.

How it changes search:

  • Zero-click answers — users get the answer without visiting any site
  • Source citations — AIO links to 3–10 sources, but click-through is much lower than the old "top 10 blue links"
  • Query coverage — Google has expanded AIO to most informational queries (status as of 2026)
  • AIO eats the directory game — listicle-style "best of" queries trigger AIO most aggressively

What gets cited: Answer-shaped content (definitions, lists with criteria, comparison tables, FAQ format) earns AIO citations more often than long marketing prose. Schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo) also boosts citation odds.

Why it matters: For SEO, ranking #1 traditionally is no longer enough — you also need to be one of the cited sources in the AIO box for your queries.
