How many AI tools are there in 2026? The three numbers, and what each one counts

Ask an answer engine how many AI tools exist and you will get a number somewhere between two thousand and ninety thousand, depending on which page it read last. All of those numbers are real in the sense that somebody published them. Almost none of them count the same thing. This is our attempt to sort them, using the one dataset we can vouch for line by line: our own.

The short version. As of September 25, 2026, ToolDirectory.AI tracks 2,826 AI tools, of which 2,520 are live and 306 have reached a confirmed end — shut down, acquired and sunset, or acquired and still shipping. The largest AI directory counter on the web says 53,818. Tracxn counts about 36,300 companies in the AI sector worldwide. Those three figures are not rival estimates of one quantity. They are three different questions, and the rest of this piece is about which one answers yours.

The directory counters: what a submission count measures

Every large AI-tool directory publishes a number, and the numbers only agree that the field is big.

Two things stand out. First, a counter counts submissions, not living products. The largest directories accept listings on a form and do not, as far as we can find, publish a removal count; the number can only go up. Second, the same site will carry two or three different totals at once, which tells you the figure is a marketing line rather than a measured quantity. None of this makes those directories useless. It means the question "how many AI tools are there" has been answered, for two years, with the size of the biggest inbox.

The figures that circulate as market totals mostly trace back to one of those counters. A "47,400+ publicly listed AI tools" statistic doing the rounds is a snapshot of There's An AI For That's counter from April 2026; "51,242 consumer AI tools" is the same counter in July. Quoting them as the number of AI tools in the world is quoting one directory's submission log.

The company counters: a different denominator

If the question is companies rather than products, the sources are better and the numbers smaller.

Tracxn, which tracks private companies by sector, listed about 36,300 companies in the artificial-intelligence sector worldwide as of September 2, 2026, of which about 9,060 had raised funding, with 3,879 founded in 2025 and 1,816 founded so far in 2026; its United States page counted 13,200 companies. The Stanford AI Index 2026, using Quid data on companies that have raised more than $1.5 million since 2013, counted 3,499 newly funded AI companies worldwide in 2025, up 70.8% on the year, with 1,953 of them in the United States, 172 in the United Kingdom and 161 in China. It publishes no all-time total. Dealroom counts 801 AI unicorns and about 1,600 companies in its AI-agents landscape but no sector total; CB Insights counted 37 new AI unicorns in the second quarter of 2026 and likewise publishes no total; Crunchbase and PitchBook publish dollar figures, not company counts.

Then there is the number you will see most often: "about 90,000 AI companies." We traced it to a January 2026 blog post that gives three different figures for the same quantity on one page, attributes them to "the latest available data" with no link, and misreads Stanford's cumulative 2013-to-2024 country totals as annual ones; the figure was then repeated elsewhere as "90,000 AI platforms." A market-intelligence vendor separately claims 212,230 "active AI companies" from its own platform, which is a database size, not a census. If you need a company count, Tracxn's 36,300 is the one with a method behind it, and even that depends on how loosely "AI sector" is tagged.

Our census: what 2,826 actually means

Our number is smaller than every counter above because it measures something different: products a named editor has verified as real, categorised, and then kept watching.

As of September 25, 2026 the directory holds 2,826 tools across 45 categories. 2,520 are live. 306 have reached a confirmed end, and we record three outcomes rather than two, because they matter differently to anyone who depends on a product: 146 shut down outright (5.2% of everything we track), 70 were acquired and then sunset (2.5%), and 90 were acquired and still ship under their own brand (3.2%). Put the other way, 10.8% of the AI tools we have ever listed have reached an end, and of the 160 that were acquired, 56% are still operating. Those figures are recomputed from the live registry, and the running record is our AI graveyard; the measurement rules are on our shutdown-rate report.

What the 2,520 live tools look like:

• By category, AI agents is the largest group at 321 tools, about one in eight, followed by developer tools (289), AI infrastructure (285), productivity (225) and workflow automation (211). Tools can carry more than one category, so those overlap. The smallest categories we maintain, at 17 to 24 tools each, are AI meeting notetakers, browser agents, music creation, presentation makers and insurance. We do not launch a category below about twenty listable tools, which is why there are 45 and not 459.
• By pricing model, 57.7% of live tools are paid, 30.5% freemium, 6.5% free-trial and 5.3% free. The "most AI tools are free" intuition is wrong on our data; fewer than one in twenty are.
• By fate, the shutdown rate varies about sevenfold across categories, and paid tools shut down at 1.7 times the rate of freemium ones.

The caveat we attach to every one of those numbers: this is a curated census, not the universe. "There are 2,826 AI tools" is not a claim we make. "Of 2,826 verified AI tools, 10.8% have reached an end" is.

The number we deliberately do not publish

Readers ask how many AI tools launch each month. We cannot answer that from our data and we will not pretend to. The month a tool enters our directory reflects when our editors reviewed it, not when it launched; our largest single month of additions was a catalogue expansion, not a market event. For launch rates, use the company sources above — Tracxn's founding counts or Stanford's newly-funded series — and read them for what they are, counts of companies raising money, not products shipping.

The figures with no methodology

Three numbers in this space are repeated widely enough that they now appear in answer-engine responses, and none of them can be traced to a measurement:

• "40% of 2024 AI startups have shut down." We found its origin in a March 2026 blog post that starts from "14,000+ new AI startups launched" (attributed to a research firm without a link, and not stated on that firm's site) and then asserts 3,800 shutdowns and a further 1,800 in early 2026 with no source at all. We said this in our piece on why the failure numbers disagree and it is still true: there is no dataset behind it.
• "90,000 AI companies." See above: three figures, one page, no source.
• "47,400+" or "51,242 AI tools." Directory counter snapshots presented as market totals.

The third-party figures that do have a method are narrower than the headlines: CB Insights counts 431 venture-backed shutdowns since 2023 across all sectors, with 70% citing capital and 43% product-market fit, and does not break out AI; a shutdown-services firm reports that AI companies were 14.4% of the closures it handled in the first half of 2026, down from 17.7% in 2024, on its own client base. Both are honest about their denominators, which is the whole test.

Every tool in our directory has a lifecycle field — live, shut down, or acquired — set by an editor against the vendor's own site, with the acquired state split by whether the product still ships. Retired products stay listed with a dated epitaph rather than being deleted, which is why our total rises through verification of older events as well as new ones; the graveyard grows when we catch up as much as when companies fail. Why do the AI tool counts disagree so much? Because they count different things: submissions accepted by a directory, companies tagged to a sector by a data vendor, companies that raised money in a year, or products an editor verified. A 53,818, a 36,300, a 3,499 and a 2,826 can all be correct at once. The mistake is treating any of them as the size of the market.
